Hello all you lovely folks. Here we are in 2012 already. The Joy Team is gearing up for our next market on February 4th, and we hope to see you all there. Today we just wanted to give a little shout out to the marvellous Genevieve Motley Pienaar, who is very soon to be a new mom. Gen is one of our longest-standing stallholders and her business has grown from strength to strength but she's still a loyal I Heart Marketer. We wish Gen all the best over the next few days, and the time of wonder and excitement that she is embarking upon.

Tips for Our Stallholders

There are a lot of new stallholders at the I Heart Market and we're so excited that the market is growing and developing. We know that it can be overwhelming when you first get out there and start selling to the public, so we've asked some of our regular stallholders to share some helpful tips. Here are a few of them:

1. Don't give up. Sometimes you have a great day, sometimes it's a lousy day. Some products move like crazy one market and don't sell at all the next. It can be weird. Just keep trying.

2. Look around. See who else is selling a similar product. Think about what differentiates your product. Look for ideas to improve your product and your presentation.

3. Listen to your fellow stallholders. They'll give you great feedback on quality, presentation, pricing and more. It's not a competition, it's a community.

Remember, the I Heart Market team believes in you and your product. We don't let just anyone sell at the market. You can do it! Now go at it, crafty people. We have two more markets in December and there are a lot of christmas shoppers out there!

1) The enormous talent, creativity and imagination on display shows that Durban can proudly complete with any market countrywide
2) The friendliness and camaraderie of the stall holders means we already feel like we’re part of the family
3) The extremely delicious food stalls means we have to use all our self control not to eat our profits!!!!
4) From a stall holders perspective, the people-watching is awe-inspiring (and we thought the beachfront was good!)
5) Finally, that grass underfoot has got to be some of the finest lawn in Durban. To see people chilling out under the trees after a successful day’s shopping ... ahhh, that’s the life.

Thinking about handmade - Guest Post

Hi fellow crafters. Sam from Hey Cherry here, with a few thoughts about the I Heart Handmade pledge. I was chatting to a friend about this campaign a few days ago, and he said something that got me thinking. What he said was 'Yes, it's all very nice to support local crafters, but what if the stuff they make is kak?' And that's a good point.

Now, I've watched a lot of crafters evolve over the last couple of years of I Heart Market (including ourselves) and the products have got better and better. That's kind of different though. Those products were made with care to start with, it's just that their makers have learned and grown and developed great new ideas. I have also seen, at various markets and shops, handmade goods that are slapdash. It's true, just because something is handmade does not mean it's well made.

Thinking about this led me to this interesting article. The gist of it is that you have to think of handmade goods as a product like other products, in competition with both the factory-made goods and the work of other crafters. And, as a maker of handmade, you have to put care into your product, into its packaging and into how it's presented. Here's a line that is very important:

Handmade can’t compete on price, nor can it compete on a moral high ground, but handmade can compete on the way it is uniquely designed for real people.

At the end of the day, as much as we can jump on a high horse about the economics of manufacturing and the morals of production, the true beauty of handmade lies in the real person standing at that stall sharing with you the story of how they created this unique and lovely thing.

When you buy handmade this season, remember that the person you are buying it from made it, especially for you (even if they've never met you before, it really is specially for you). They sat up late at night cutting and sewing and welding and glueing and taping and packing and labelling. They're there, right in front of you. That's a gift in itself.

The Handmade Marketplace (How to sell your product locally, globally and online) is a really great book that offers advice to small businesses much like those you will find at I heart Market. It finds the perfect balance between creativity and success. The topics covered range from marketing basics, your craft community, blogging and even where to sell your products (fairs, markets, shops, online). Advice like this can take years to learn through personal experience so it is wonderful to have it all summed up in a book. We can all agree that the crafting within a business is the fun aspect, but the admin, marketing and blogging can sometimes seem daunting and this book makes it all seem clear plus it is pretty to look at too. Finally a text book for crafty types...now I wish that was something they offered at school.

Twitter blanket drive

Ask Ashe asked us to participate in the Twitter Blanket Drive and this is what she said:

For the last 2 years I’ve been involved in Treasures for Charity – an event where we collected ‘still wearable’ fashion from some of Durban’s fashionistas and sold it all for charity.

This year, I’ve decided to throw my weight behind theTwitter Blanket Drive.

I’m pretty new to twitter and must say, whilst many perceive it to be a regurgitation of ‘what I had for breakfast’ tweets, I have found it to be a wildly amusing ‘adult chat room’ where I’ve ‘met’ some great people, whom I have now met in person and I’m thoroughly enjoying forging some new friendships.

So what is the Twitter Blanket Drive?

About a year ago, Melanie Minnaar (@melanieminnaar) sent out a tweet asking if anyone wanted to drop off a blanket and have a cup of coffee – basically arranging a ‘tweetup’ (where tweeters meet in person). The blankets were all dontaed to charity and this single tweet amassed over 700 blankets!

This year, the power of social networking has added huge momentum to this initiative and there is now a nationwide ‘battle’ to see which province can collect the most blankets. And this is where our little crew comes in!

On the 4th June 2011, our group of Durbanites – @NevinSP @waewest @coaxel @AMG133 @lizlaughalot @MadamMichelle and myself – @askashe have set up 3 separate collection points in Durban, throughout the day:

9am – 12pm at the I Heart Market at the DLI Hall between the Greyville Racecourse

11am – 4pm at Luna Rossa at Gateway Shopping Centre (next to Primi in the fountain food court)

4:30pm – 8pm at Livingston’s Gastropub in Glenore Centre, Glenashley – we’ll be set up there for the evening to watch the Sharks vs Cheetahs game, have a festive tweetup & collect as many blankets as possible!

HOW CAN YOU HELP:

1. Let everyone you know about the event inDurban

2. Come to one of the venues on 4th June and drop off a blanket

3. Fellow bloggers – any coverage you can give us would be MUCH appreciated

4. Fellow tweeters – retweet the #TBD tweets about the collection points

We’ve got some fantastic support through the likes of Williams Hunt, ABSA, CarsSA,co.za, SAPPI, TBWA, Paton Tupper, Car Magazine and even local ‘celebs’ are retweeting the #TBD venues – look out for Ross Skeate of the Sharks and Ian F from East Coast radio on twitter…

Our designer Dominic Strauss doesn't get out of the house much.

He is super busy and actually he is quite happy to stay in his cave with his lady and baby and be left alone with his mind.

And what a great mind it is!

He is truely one of the most creative people i know.

So last month i invited him to the market for inspiration.

(He hadn't been for over a year!)

He said that after 26 different market posters, he wondered if he would lose inspiration and have to call time out...

Well, after perusing the market last month, he said he now has enough inspiration for another 26 posters.

He was impressed and inspired by all our stallholders.
