4 Things I Heart
curated by Nicola Ashe
1. Beetroot & Bear
“They say you eat with your eyes first and this most definitely attracted me to this stand at the market. But the taste keeps me coming back for more! Passionately made, insanely delicious, beautifully presented - everything is seasonal and fresh and there's nothing left on my plate each time.”
Beetroot & Bear is a local catering company run by the very talented Justine Huizenga, who is also an incredible food stylist and recipe developer. You can’t help but drool everytime she posts a new dish to Instagram, so if food is your thing, follow along here.
2. Rondavel
“Handmade with love in the KZN Midlands, there really is something special about this brand. I'm addicted to their soaps which are all made from sustainable African ingredients, hand poured, wrapped and packed - a true brand experience. Their dog shampoo bar is also pretty amazing.”
Chikondi & Kate are a Botanical family from Malawi, now based in the Midlands. They have been at the market for years, and we have loved watching them develop and innovate their products. You can catch Chikondi in the top tent - just look for the guy with the biggest, friendliest smile! Follow them on Instagram here.
3. Distillery 031
“Gin is in! And I love that I can pick up this locally made blend, topped up with tonic and park off under the trees and watch the world go by. Don't mind their vodka either ;)”
Locally crafted spirits with a Durban flavour is what you will find at Distillery 031! When Andrew and his team are not pouring delicious drinks and cocktails at festivals, markets and events you can find them at their home in the Station Drive Precinct. Check out their Distillery Tours - a really cool way to spend the day out in Durbs: Distillery Tours.
4. Woodnewz
“Cannot wait to have our kitchen renovation done so that I can stock up on some of these locally made stools from Woodnewz. They come in 3 different heights and are part of 'The Range', a contemporary range of furniture made from laminated plywood.”
As you can tell, Woodnewz is a big market favourite! Their bespoke furniture pieces are always a hit and you can be guaranteed of great quality. Follow them on Instagram here: Woodnewz
Come and support all these local creators, makers, designers and entrepreneurs every first Saturday of the month on the lawns of Moses Mabhida Stadium. We look forward to seeing you there!
