New Trader: Noush
We are so very excited to welcome Noush to i heart market!
Manoushka Kraal of Noush hails from Amsterdam originally. Luckily for us, she fell madly in love with a South African man and since then has been based in Durban, developing products with traditional African materials while adding modern and fun details.
"The last two years I have worked as a product designer for a NGO called Africa!Ignite. I developed several successful products during this time, one of them being the 'Langazela' cushion covers. The front panel of the cushions is made out of recycled cornsacks that are embroidered with wool. It was amazing to discover that the sacks create the perfect grid for embroidery."
"I still work with the same crafters as before - almost all of them are based in deep rural KwaZulu-Natal...
I still use the same technique of embroidering but decided to explore other materials as well. My big new love is "the Tartan bag!" I use it in all sorts of different ways... As lampshade, trims on cushion covers or as a bag with a make-over!"
Noush has a stylish fun sense of design and a sharp eye for taking everyday African products and turning them into gorgeous pieces.
Look out for Noush at I heart market this Saturday!

Slowly, but surely we have been seeing more Menswear traders at the market.
We are excited about this and hoping it will attract more and more.
Whether it's a funky cap, a dapper bow tie for a function or just some more vinyl to add to your collection, I heart market is the place.
So bring your mates or your girlfriend and browse the aisles.
If you are a creator or designer of Menswear and interested in joining the i heart market, please mail us on thejoyteam@gmail.com

New Trader: Oak and Willow
New traders, Oak and Willow will be joining us at the next i heart market on 3rd August at Moses Mabhida.
Oak and Willow make beautiful headboards and art pieces out of reclaimed wooden pallets with inspirational phrases and great colour scheme.
This is the story of how the business started.
"It all started when I got married. I wanted decor and my dad said he'll make it . At the wedding, everyone loved the decor so we decided then that wooden decor could be a feasible business and that we'd start a small business producing hand-crafted wooden decor. All our wood is recycled and we love transforming "scrap wood and nails" into something pretty."
"This is just the start and we already have had numerous orders. My dad makes the wooden boards together with a local from the valley of 1000 Hills. I'd love to see it grow and have the opportunity to employ local underprivileged people and empower them when Oak and Willow grows bigger. I have a huge heart for community and empowering the hopeless through developing their gifts and talents. Through empowerment I really think we could help alleviate poverty and I'm just one in a million doing my part to serve the community and help make a difference in the lives of others particularly the underprivileged." - Janice MacMillan

Whole lot of Dirty...
Dirty collective is back at I heart market this month with some sick winter stock and collaborations from local designers.
11.4.13
Locally tailored
Dirty Indigo
Good product, right message and keeping it east of the coast.
Think trendy, design and style – Dirty Indigo has it all. Described as an "indigenously" tailored product, crafted the ”old school” way, it satisfies the need for authentic localism in the City of Durban and so much more.
Where
most commercial fashion brands display the usual imported humdrum, Dirty Indigo
gladly stumbles through the beautiful chaos of our local culture, searching for
an honest, clean, clearer and more tangible identity. The designs and styles
are cut and sewn locally with each item touched by the hand of its creators
from conception and artwork through to hand held screen-printing.
Owner and designer Tav Naidoo is one of I Heart Market’s fantastic traders, adding a unique and diverse element of style to the market atmosphere. We spent some time with Dirty Indigo recently to find out more about Tav’s success and inspiration for his work.
1.
Tell us a bit about your product and how you started the brand Dirty Indigo?
The big
question was…how would we get the formula right?
The plan was to keep it fresh with an ‘all hands on deck’ approach creating simple, one colour prints with a 160gm local sourced fabric base to be stitched in a local factory with our unique fit. Since the t-shirts are printed by us we ensured no mass production and no two t-shirts being the exact same.
2. How and why did you choose that name for your brand? Is there a story behind it?
4. What inspires you to create, design or innovate?
6. How long have you been with I Heart Market and what do you enjoy most about it?

Dirty
indigo was created with the idea of Authentic Local ‘flava’. By this we mean
with the chaos of our local culture. As we know, our country is filling up with
international brands and there philosophies. When I walked around Durban I saw
so many people
wearing t-shirts saying “I LOVE NY”, that just caused us to clinch our teeth. So from there we decided that we were going to create cutting-edge, trendy prints for t-shirts
using our city and its culture as inspiration.

2. How and why did you choose that name for your brand? Is there a story behind it?
The name was
created from the love of denim. Dirty Indigo denim is just the way forward in
our opinion and will always stand the test of time. We feel Durban is known for
being a city of denim; it’s simply worn every day.
4. What inspires you to create, design or innovate?
A
simple passion for fashion, design and the city of Durban.
5.
What is unique, conceptual or interesting about
Dirty Indigo?
Dirty
Indigo is unique because it's all about Durban and our quality of the fabric
and our prints we use sets it apart from the rest. Our prints are highly trendy
and encompass an element of vintage which makes them special. Our packaging too
is unique and edgy, reminiscent of those late nights and after hour’s mission
for a Johnnies Roti.
6. How long have you been with I Heart Market and what do you enjoy most about it?
We
have been with I Heart Market from August 2012 and it’s simple, we love the
atmosphere and the trendy people that are there every month. You guys are rock
stars.
7.
How has Durban and living in Durban influenced your
creativity?
It
has inspired us to create a new fashion brand, DIRTY INDIGO . A brand that is
local and creative and celebrates design and quality fashion merchandise.
Connect with Dirty Indigo for more trendy
designs.

Easter is upon us
Easter Eggs
Around the time of Easter, the air is always filled with so much excitement and light hearted cheer.
A strong contributor, we feel, is the abundance of chocolate in various shapes and forms. Excitement just seems follow in its path. Its also a great time for social gatherings and fun activities. We just love these beautiful hand painted easter eggs and drawing from this inspiration, why not try this great Easter activity? Send them out as gifts or just nibble on them yourselves; either way, its wonderfully fun.
All you need is a bunch of white candy coated chocolate easter eggs (the famously delicious ones), small paint brushes and food colouring (in various colours). Pour the food colouring into shallow dishes. Dip your paint brushes in and start decorating those eggs!
Leave to dry once done. Then share, eat and enjoy.

Creative Collaboration
Artist and I Heart Market trader Sue Sylvester owner of Inkanyezi recently collaborated with Mr Price Home to create beautifully designed linen products in her signature style.
This is a unique Mr Price Home collaboration. Local South African designers and artists are celebrated and featured for their talent and creative contributions through limited product ranges amongst other things.

We are so happy to hear of her success and thought you may like to see the video she is featured in. The short video, created by Rooinooi, shows Sue's studio, her stunning designs and chats briefly to the creative artist herself, giving an insight into the mind and passion behind each piece of work.
Sue is a valued trader at I Heart Market and brings a fresh approach to design, art and the creative process with both her methods of creating and the manner in which she expresses them. All these elements amalgamate into gorgeous aesthetics for the home.

Welcome Aboard, Mej Lues!
We are really excited to welcome Mej Lues Designer Clothing to the I heart market family.
So excited that we asked her a few questions.
This is what she said...
How long have you been in the industry?
I launched my first label under my own name 'Hanrie Lues' in 2005, when I was chosen as the Free state finalist in the Vodacom DBN July for the first time. I mainly focussed on evening wear and client based garments. I launched my daywear label 'Mej. Lues' last year and debuted my first collection at SA Fashion Week in JHB.
When did your passion for fashion begin?
My grandmother was a tailor and my mother was an artist, so I have always been surrounded by inspiring women and beautiful crafts. I started by drawing dresses for my paperdolls and then later when I got my first sewing machine, I sewed clothes for my Barbie dolls and tried to sell them to my friends!!!
Why did you decide to join the I heart market?
I have heard only amazing things from friends that are also involved with the market, and I have been in love with the entire concept since I visited my first I heart, 2 yrs ago when. I first moved to DBN.
Do you have any other outlets for your product?
I am currently supplying a boutique in JHB called Egality, as well as Bianca Warren's shop in La Lucia. My evening wear is also available at Just Prom in Glenwood Village.
What is your fashion staple?
My own personal fashion staple would have to be a flowy high-waisted skirt. In any fabric, short, mid, long length, even the very popular hi-lo hem! I feel that it is a trusted and very versatile item in my closet. From my collection I would also say that the high waisted skirt is a favourite, as well as my little summer dresses.
What can you simply not live without?
{God} ...... And the internet!! LOL
Who inspires you?
My gran, my mom, my aunt and my dad. I'm an only child so family has been very important for me and they have each inspired me in their own way to keep on going and NOT give up on my dreams. Style wise, I am fascinated by the different street-styles found all over the world! Personal style inspires me so much!
Be sure to swing past Hanrie's Gazebo stall at the I heart Market on the 16th February.

Guest Post: Market Culture by Jenna Kelly
Ask any self respecting Durbanite what
their plans are for the first Saturday of every month and you’ll find that
attending the now famous I Heart Market
at the Moses Mabhida stadium, will be on the programme.
The I
Heart Market has quickly changed the modus operandi for a variety of Durban
cliques. Saturdays have been altered by this new era of market goers and a new
culture has seemingly formed from this novel Saturday “must do”. It is also
rather well known that during one’s mandatory meander around the market, one
will notice a few distinct groups of people:
The
Cool Moms
The glam moms of Durban love to be seen and
heard in-between the trendy children’s-wear stalls and fresh lemonade stand.
It’s no longer acceptable to serve your book club attendees snacks from
Woolies, but rather fresh macaroons and treats, thoughtfully purchased from the
Market. The Cool Moms boast a chic
wardrobe and social grace as well as a cute toddler or two. Alternatively all
the chicks have flown the coup and the Saturday market becomes a great platform
for “catch up’s” with the Jones’s.
The
Trendy Dog Owners
Not a scraggly mutt to be seen. Only French
boxers, Boston Terriers, English Bull Dogs and formerly unknown breads of “Labradoodle”
are found patrolling around with their proud owners, happy to have the
attention on their prime pooches. Your dog best have a city or Country at the
start of its breed’s name if you expect to proudly parade it around the grassy
banks.
The
Long Boarders
Cool dudes on their retro long boards, annoying
exasperated security guards while they glide around the marble floors
surrounding the stadium, showing off their moves and checking out chicks. Other
modes of transportation to occupy the smaller youngsters while Mom finds those
beloved macaroons include roller blades and Segways. Watch yourself upon exit
if you’re in the underground parking, you’ll be dodging these kids on some
serious wheels!
The
Fashionistas
The trendy come to take pride in parading their
best outfits for their market stroll as well as to scope out what else is going
on in the contemporary fashion scene of Durbs.
The
Foodies
Those that feel the status quo market food
of egg and bacon rolls is insufficient can be seen scattered on the banks and
on the available tables, enjoying the finer things in life. The Foodies scoff at those shovelling
pancakes into their gullets, while they sip on freshly blended lemonade and
enjoy Parma ham flat breads or in vogue cupcakes.
The
Hipsters
A little off-beat and border lining The Fashionistas, The Hipsters come to brag about attending like, a rad local market
to try be the first to find novelties like sunglasses made from skateboards,
second hand brogues or maybe a vintage brooch to wow the common masses. The
vinyl collection and music floating around the market are enough to attract any
“too school for cool” hipster.
All ‘n all the I Heart Market has somehow managed to bring the whole of Durban together.
There is room and common ground for all of Durban’s inhabitants. Even the upper
highway folk who generally refuse to venture down the infamous Fields Hill too
many times a month, will religiously make the trek to the market. Each
individual seemingly has their own market ritual .Whether it’s the hours spent
prepping outfits or to run and grab a fresh juice followed by a syrupy waffle,
everyone has their routine. The I Heart Market
has undeniably shattered the general market illusions and rather archaic
stigmas. Markets are no longer lines of stalls bearing the same monotonous
items that Mom and Dad drag the unwilling kids too, for lack of better things
to do. It has become a platform for gathering, social expression and community
upliftment. People of all ages, colours, genders, cliques and areas manage to
come together for some good food, good music and good shopping. I Heart Market was undoubtedly the first
of its kind in the Durban area and continues to forge a new path for our beloved
city. A market goer summed it all up when quoted saying “You guys have changed
the way Durban does Saturdays” when speaking to the brainchild behind this
Saturday morning sensation. Thanks to this new market-going community, two
things are for certain;
We all heart the market.
And more importantly, we all heart Durban.
