Shop Local with I heart MKT

I heart Market has the largest display of locally produced, designed, manufactured and sourced design ware in KZN, possibly even SA.
So wanna know why you should shop local these holidays?
Around this time last year, we wrote an article for the Moses Mabidha Stadium website on why shop local. See here for more.

"Buying handmade is a personal decision but the impact can have an important roll on effect for the individual crafter, the local economy, the community and the environment. And if that doesn’t sway you – then maybe the feel-good factor will. Buying handmade just makes you feel good!"

If you would like to support our 'I Shop Local' campaign - please feel free to post this button to your Social Media and link us.
See you at the Market!

I heart Market - November

It's that time again!
Hope to see you there.

Concept and design by Dominic Strauss.

Before I Die...

Last month at the i heart market we were lucky enough to be part of a larger initaitive - the Before I Die wall hosted by Marissa Whittle, Honours student at Vega, and Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Before I Die is an interactive public art project that invites people to share their hopes and dreams in public space.

The first KZN Before I Die wall was a great success. Visitors of the stadium jumped at the opportunity to interact with the wall. People from all over South Africa and as far afield as Finland and Pakistan grabbed chalk and shared their dreams with the world.

This is what some of them had to say.

Before I die I want to...

Help people help others
Live an extraordinary life
Make a difference even if just with a smile
Help the underprivileged in my community
Reach one million children with my conservation message
Save the world through cycling
Be bold enough to be whoever I want to be
Blow a million rand just like THAT!
See the end to Police brutality
Go on a food journey
See my wife cancer free
Know that I have parented children who care more about the world and others than things and themselves

There are over 375 walls in 60 countries around the world in 25 different languages.
Well done, to all involved to in the Durban wall.
What an inspiring way to bring a community together!

New Trader: Noush

We are so very excited to welcome Noush to i heart market!

Manoushka Kraal of Noush hails from Amsterdam originally. Luckily for us, she fell madly in love with a South African man and since then has been based in Durban, developing products with traditional African materials while adding modern and fun details.

"The last two years I have worked as a product designer for a NGO called Africa!Ignite. I developed several successful products during this time, one of them being the 'Langazela' cushion covers. The front panel of the cushions is made out of recycled cornsacks that are embroidered with wool. It was amazing to discover that the sacks create the perfect grid for embroidery."

"I still work with the same crafters as before - almost all of them are based in deep rural KwaZulu-Natal...
I still use the same technique of embroidering but decided to explore other materials as well. My big new love is "the Tartan bag!" I use it in all sorts of different ways... As lampshade, trims on cushion covers or as a bag with a make-over!"

Noush has a stylish fun sense of design and a sharp eye for taking everyday African products and turning them into gorgeous pieces.
Look out for Noush at I heart market this Saturday!

Winter Suitcase Showcase at Spiga

We, here at I heart Market, really love our Suitcase Showcases that we host at Spiga.

We had so much fun on Saturday at our Winter Suitcase Showcase.
The skies were blue, the music was groovy, there were complimentary beer tastings from CBC (Cape Brewing Company), the kiddies craft area rocked, the homemade Spiga minestrone was warm and hearty and the people friendly.

Our Suitcase Showcases are an fantastic opportunity for us to have a more intimate, themed market. What we love about them is that we get to collaborate with Spiga (our favorite Italian restaurant) in their sunny mediterranean courtyard, we have more time to mingle and chat to our customers, our traders get to engage with people on a more personal level and we love curating the market to fit the particular theme of the day.

Keep an ear open for our next Suitcase Showcase in August at Spiga.
It's going to be a treasure trove of gems.

My Granny's Pantry - A Kitchen Memoir by Margaret Wasserfell

‘All my life I have enjoyed nothing more than baking a batch of scones or a gorgeous cake. My granny gave me those skills and so I picked up her battered recipe book and started a small baking business.’ – Margaret Wasserfall

Margaret Wasserfell sells her delectable cakes at I heart market every month. In July, she will be selling and signing her latest cookbook, My Granny's Pantry - A Kitchen Memoir.
Be the first in the country to get your hands on this wonderful cookbook.

This charming memoir-cum-cookbook, written by Margaret Wasserfall, well known as former editor of SA Garden and Home and SA Country Life, tells of the influence of her redoubtable Scottish grandmother as she grew up, not least in teaching her about food and cooking.
By drawing together the food memories of her childhood, cooking with her Scottish granny and making trips into town to shop for food, Margaret reflects on how different life once was. It was a time when a 25 litre paraffin tin of crayfish cost 2 shillings and sixpence. It was a time when the kitchen cupboard held a collection of tins filled with homemade cakes and biscuits and crunchies for the household to snack on.
Margaret also examines, through anecdotes and personal observations from the time, how a family with strong Scottish roots gradually changed their lives and their cooking to become a South African family. In these pages you will find recipes that you remember from your childhood and will also recall a time when the way we ate and the way we marked the passing of our days was completely different from today.
When Margaret retired, she re-invented herself and turned to one of her favourite pastimes – baking. Margaret is now an artisan baker working from home and baking a range of cookies and cakes and supplying a range of select customers.

What's up in June?

We, here at I heart market have a few things planned for June...
Firstly, there is our usual I heart market day at Moses Mabhida Stadium on the 1st June. Hopefully the weather is going to be as gorgeous as it has been for the last few weeks and it will be a lovely day out for all.

Next up, we are launching our Share a Square campaign in collaboration with Spiga.
We are asking all you crafty people out there to knit or crochet as many 12cm squares as you can so that we can stitch them up to make blankets for the under privileged.
We would like to encourage as many people as possible to get on board. Please ask your schools/book clubs/churches/local old age homes to help us out.

Finally, after the great success of our Suitcase Showcase at Spiga in April, we have decided to host a Winter Suitcase Showcase at Spiga on the 29th June from 10am to 2pm and we will be carefully selecting traders to fit the theme.
We had a grand day in the Spiga courtyard last time and know it will be just as much fun this time. Bring your #shareasquare squares to drop off at our Suitcase Showcase and join us for a cocktail.

Suitcase Showcase, not to be missed!

I Heart Market Suitcase Showcase
April, is certainly a month of market magic. I Heart market will be having not just one amazing market, but two, on the 1st and 6th of April.

We have so many plans up our sleeves and we can't wait to share them.
First on our list the market on the 1st of April. We have got together with Spiga, the famed Durban Restaurant on Florida Road to bring you a wonderful day out for family and friends.

This is a unique market event, I Heart Market on a smaller yet equally special scale. So escape into a world of charm to the beautiful Spiga courtyard space for a fun day out at I Heart Market's Suitcase Showcase.

Inspired by informal, old school junk sales, the exhibiting traders will showcase their products using a smaller display area. This certainly makes for some innovative ideas as traders have to use their imaginations to create displays that define the principles of this space. This market not only has its usual impressive crafts, fashionable items and artistic expressions but other activities too. There is a 'Lil Spiga Masterchef' area for kids to make their own fun pizzas and a do-it-yourself craft area. So bring your friends and family and pop in for a day of fun and delicious Spiga treats.

Have a look at some of the wonderful displays we found, just a few ideas to excite and inspire.
