Shop Local with I heart MKT

I heart Market has the largest display of locally produced, designed, manufactured and sourced design ware in KZN, possibly even SA.
So wanna know why you should shop local these holidays?
Around this time last year, we wrote an article for the Moses Mabidha Stadium website on why shop local. See here for more.

"Buying handmade is a personal decision but the impact can have an important roll on effect for the individual crafter, the local economy, the community and the environment. And if that doesn’t sway you – then maybe the feel-good factor will. Buying handmade just makes you feel good!"

If you would like to support our 'I Shop Local' campaign - please feel free to post this button to your Social Media and link us.
See you at the Market!

New Trader: strike.lamps

A big welcome to our new trader strike.lamps!

Strike.lamps are Trent Moffett, a first year student at AFDA and Jessica-Lee VanGo, a first year photography student at DUT. They both make these exciting new lamps.
The colour ways are endless and he can make up any colour combination that you wish for.

"Being Proudly South African I source the material from a local plastics concern, and ensured these vinyls were RECYCABLE (they are ECO FRIENDLY POLYMERIC free from harmful plasiticizers and chlorine making the film safe on childrens toys or food labeling). I buy it in sheets and they cut to my specs. Other locals companies sell the stud T clips and nuts and bolts which are also plastic, used to create the 'waves' on these lamps. I work from my parents home in Ballito on a table tennis table.... in a store room or on my mum's work desk." - Trent Moffett

Wake up Wake up its a beautiful day

Coffee Culture
Everyone loves a cup off coffee or tea to get going in the morning or even just to relax during the day.

Specifically, coffee culture in South Africa has grown substantially in the last few years making more and more taste buds craving the taste of roasted goodness. To meet this demand, cafés have popped up everywhere offering a warm and creative atmosphere for social gatherings and coffee enjoyment. This enjoyment isn't only limited to hot coffee delights though as iced coffee and tea and hot artisanal teas  are also often part of this wonderful parcel.

So where can one go to experience such wonder one may ask? Some of our favourite places are right here in Durban and The Factory Café is one of the cafes at the top of our list.

Housed in the Colombo Tea and Coffee factory building on the Gale street (number 369), this café is one to visit.

The wonderful atmosphere will sweep you off your feet and take you down a friendly and delicious road. The Factory Café also hosts events showcasing the creations of artisits, fashion and furniture designers and musicians. We often pop in there on Saturday morning and durning the week form time to time, it is definityle a place to visit.

Winter Suitcase Showcase at Spiga

We, here at I heart Market, really love our Suitcase Showcases that we host at Spiga.

We had so much fun on Saturday at our Winter Suitcase Showcase.
The skies were blue, the music was groovy, there were complimentary beer tastings from CBC (Cape Brewing Company), the kiddies craft area rocked, the homemade Spiga minestrone was warm and hearty and the people friendly.

Our Suitcase Showcases are an fantastic opportunity for us to have a more intimate, themed market. What we love about them is that we get to collaborate with Spiga (our favorite Italian restaurant) in their sunny mediterranean courtyard, we have more time to mingle and chat to our customers, our traders get to engage with people on a more personal level and we love curating the market to fit the particular theme of the day.

Keep an ear open for our next Suitcase Showcase in August at Spiga.
It's going to be a treasure trove of gems.

My Granny's Pantry - A Kitchen Memoir by Margaret Wasserfell

‘All my life I have enjoyed nothing more than baking a batch of scones or a gorgeous cake. My granny gave me those skills and so I picked up her battered recipe book and started a small baking business.’ – Margaret Wasserfall

Margaret Wasserfell sells her delectable cakes at I heart market every month. In July, she will be selling and signing her latest cookbook, My Granny's Pantry - A Kitchen Memoir.
Be the first in the country to get your hands on this wonderful cookbook.

This charming memoir-cum-cookbook, written by Margaret Wasserfall, well known as former editor of SA Garden and Home and SA Country Life, tells of the influence of her redoubtable Scottish grandmother as she grew up, not least in teaching her about food and cooking.
By drawing together the food memories of her childhood, cooking with her Scottish granny and making trips into town to shop for food, Margaret reflects on how different life once was. It was a time when a 25 litre paraffin tin of crayfish cost 2 shillings and sixpence. It was a time when the kitchen cupboard held a collection of tins filled with homemade cakes and biscuits and crunchies for the household to snack on.
Margaret also examines, through anecdotes and personal observations from the time, how a family with strong Scottish roots gradually changed their lives and their cooking to become a South African family. In these pages you will find recipes that you remember from your childhood and will also recall a time when the way we ate and the way we marked the passing of our days was completely different from today.
When Margaret retired, she re-invented herself and turned to one of her favourite pastimes – baking. Margaret is now an artisan baker working from home and baking a range of cookies and cakes and supplying a range of select customers.

Sweet Saturday

Treats and coffee

The May I Heart Market held last Saturday was a wonderful success! We had such a great time seeing everyone perusing through the stalls and socializing wirh friends and traders.

The day was chilly but the atmosphere was still amazing and we thank all those who stopped by. We all warmed up with coffee from the Coffee Guys and munched on delicious muslie with fresh fruit and yogurt from our new trader Juice up

We also indulged in some homemade crunchies, a favourite in the I Heart Market office and loved by our team. There are always a few stashed in our bag to snack on so here's the recipe. They are oh so delicious and a must for every kitchen. So bake up a storm everyone and fill those jars with these tasty treats that are close to our hearts.

To make:

250ml cake flour
250ml sugar
500ml oats or muslie
100g margarine
30ml syrup
5ml bycarb
5ml hot water

Mix all the dry ingredients together.
Melt margarine and syrup in a pot.
Mix bycarb with the hot water, then add to the syrup mixture.
Pour the syrup mixture into the dry ingredients and mix well unitl all the dry mixture has been incorporated.
Grease or line a baking tray with foil or wax paper and empty the mixture in.
Tighly pack it in, pressing it down.
Bake for 4-15 minutes. Test if it's ready by pressing gently on the top, if firm, remove from the oven.
Cut into squares, wait 5 minutes then remove from tray onto a cooling rack.

Our secret tip:
Melt some dark chocolate and spread or drizzle it over the top once the crunchies are cool.
Simply delicious. Enjoy.

A Gardening we did go

Planting Pretty
This weekend we were feeling creative and decided on a bit of D.I.Y.

We came across this wonderful idea for garden pots from A Beautiful Mess that is simple, inexpensive and a lot of fun.

All you need is some Lace, craft glue, a box of old ceramic or clay pots, scissors, paintbrush and plants. We decided on some lovely succulents to go in these renovated pots but any plants will do.

Start by brushing glue all over a pot with the paintbrush. Stick the lace over the glue covering the pot or to a design of your creation. Then to Finnish off, brush a layer of glue over the top of the lace and allow to dry. Once they are completely dry, start potting those plants and decorate your garden.

Reminiscing

An afternoon to remember

On the weekend, we stopped in at Spiga d'oro to check out the live music, sip on some BOS Ice Tea, relax and soak up the courtyard sun on the terrace. What a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon. It got us chatting and reminiscing about I Heart Market's Suitcase Showcase event that took place here a short while ago, such a great success.

The people, the sunny day and the inspiring display of creativity. We have such fond memories of that day so we thought we would share some special moments of that market with all of you. Enjoy.
